The FAQ doesn't actually say how the data will be used though. As far as I can see the FAQ makes no mention of practical applications of the data collected whatsoever, e.g. Youview has a partition in the PVR HDD for push content. Will the data be used for push content? Will this be towards individuals? Or targeted at groups? Or just the same for everyone?

Yes it does:

We and our content providers will use your postcode for reporting and/or analysis purposes and/or to provide Content-related services which may include additional and improved localisation services (such as local radio), beyond what can be provided through simply using your approximate geographic location. We and our content providers may also use your postcode to provide locally relevant advertising to you on your YouView device

and for Usage data:

YouView will use this data...to power services such as ‘Most Popular’ and ‘Recommendations’, for market analytics purposes, to provide anonymous and/or aggregated reports to content providers and/or other third parties and to optimise user journeys and more generally to improve the YouView Service.

To me that reads as a generalisation of what they may do with the data.

So what would you want them to say?

They wouldn't say because they probably aren't sure themselves yet how they would use the data until the platform is up and running and has a decent userbase.

I believe that Tivo does the same sort of thing.
