Unhappy sftp connection issues

why cant I access an sftp server through virin media network? I have used filezilla and winscp but neither will connect to the server. they can connect to a standard ftp server though. I can connect through my mobile phone network so the user credentials are good. The tech boys at VM dropped the superhub 2 into modem mode and still cant connect , they suggested I post here !

Re: sftp connection issues

Obvious things to try first:

1) Is the port open and listening at the server?

2) Is a firewall dropping incoming connections to the server's port?

3) Is the server behind NAT or a router that is not forwarding the port to the server behind it?

4) Is the time on both client and server out of sync with one another by enough of a gap that the certificate is not accepted?

Other than that, maybe it's really something to do with VM or something related to the problem that's causing people problems connecting to Playstation Network.

Re: sftp connection issues

I connect to all my servers ok via WinSCP (and Putty) - many on a daily basis (from my VM connection).
