New installation
Hello all,
Have recently signed up to the 50mb package with XXL TV and M Phone ( due to be installed on 16th Aug ).
Do i have any control over locations of cable entry etc etc?
We live on a reasonably new estate 10/11 years, so our current services ( BT )come in through an underground duct to a grey ducted Telephone entry point at the front of the house. Would this be where the virgin services would come in? im assuming the underground duct is a shared service duct.

Re: New installation
Just had a phone call from the missus to say that Virgin had turned up to do a pre install survey? is this the norm?
Apparently they were runing the cables in preperation for the install next week. The engineer said to the wife that if there were any issues then they would have to obtain permission from the council to do any digging around.
But apparently they have done what they needed to do and have now buggered off, so hopefully all is well.

Re: New installation
They often do do a pre-survey. This is to check the pavement ducts and stuff are all in place and intact so that the cable can be pulled through. It also has a quick look at your front garden i.e. can they dig through grass and flower beds, or are they going to have problems with pavings.
You get a little choice with the cable routing, but there are also limitations. It helps to be friendly and work with the installer for a practical solution. A cup of tea / coffee on offer can lubricate the process Essentially a cable needs to be run in a buried green hose from the street pavement to the front of your house. They will take a fairly straight route from wherever the pavement Tee is (look for a plastic disc or circle). You'll get a box, usually brown, on the front of the house. From there cable is run to where you want your TV and modem points. Again a reasonably direct route with the cable driled through an external wall and run around the skirtings. Try to get the phone point positioned close to the BT master point point as that makes connecting any existing extensions easier. You may get a small white box on the skirting inside where cables are terminated and split with an isolator.

Re: New installation
Well just got in and had a quick look.
Looks like they have pulled a cable through to the house already, obviously has been cable here before as the green pipe is already buried there in the ground.
Just a black coiled cable coming through, one copper type and phone by the looks of it. Is that the norm?

Re: New installation
Do/would VM engineers consider using my existing sky cables going to my TV?
The cable entry points are in the exact same position that the VM engineer will place the outside box.

Re: New installation
Ideally they shouldn't use other cables. That would prevent you going back to Sky in the future. And the cables used by Virgin are oftern a different standard.

Ok actually.
Engineer was ok, moaned about his role a lot though.
Was reasonably neat, left cables loose where I wanted them with enough slack to move around. Didn't get my wireless N dongle though despite asking, was told that he didn't have any ( is this a virgin or engineer con? ).
Didn't get much of a demonstration in anything, think he wanted to get to the next job. But everything works as it should so I'm not too fussed.
Loving 50mb Internet...... Especially coming from 2.5mb adsl
