Question High packet loss (M27)

Hello, I need some help with my connection. Since around the middle of last week I've been experiencing extremely poor web browsing, particularly evenings and the weekend. To the point where there was no point having the PC switched on. I've done some ping tests and found a high amount of packet loss (30%+ evenings/weekend, around 6% now at 8am Tuesday).

I've been through the usual telephone support, they said they are sending out a new cable modem but I think this sounds more like a faulty/oversubscribed UBR? (ward1 I believe)

Can anybody help?

Re: High packet loss (M27)

Hiya,

This is my first posting on CF so please be gentle with me.

I had the same issue, starting Friday evening and most of the weekend. I spoke to a very helpful chap at VM who confirmed that was a 'major issue' at one of the POPs and that engineers were aware of the issue.

I was asked to turn my modem off for a few minutes on Monday (yesterday) after midday as this was when the engineering work was due to complete. I duly did that when I got home from work yesterday evening and so far, so good. I'm back to the (almost) full 10mb and haven't had any packet loss (did loads of pinging yesterday evening).

Hope that helps,

Rich

PS I'm in Havant

You need to find out where the packet loss is-connect your PC directly to the modem, reboot/power down/up the modem and do an ipconfig /all on a DOS command line. The default gateway is your UBR. Do an extended ping (ping xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa -t) ping to that and if there is no packet loss, then your UBR is fine (most of the time).
Dont leave the PC for too long without switching in a firewall as your naked to the Net with this set-up

HTH

Thumbs up Re: High packet loss (M27) - fixed

Thanks for the responses. The new modem arrived today so I set it up and guess what, my connection is now perfect. Also had a reply in the newsgroup from a Virgin staffer saying my UBR was less than 80% subscribed and working fine. Just a faulty modem after all

Credit to Virgin for getting a new modem to me quickly!
