New Years Honours List

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38470732

Quote:
Andy Murray, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill are among the Olympic stars recognised in a New Year Honours list which also includes big names from the entertainment world.

Rio 2016 men's tennis champion Murray and double gold-winning athlete Farah receive knighthoods, while heptathlete Ennis-Hill becomes a dame.
A host of Paralympians also receive honours, including 11-times gold medallist dressage rider Lee Pearson who receives a knighthood.

Veteran comic Ken Dodd said he felt "highly tickled" to receive a knighthood at the age of 89.
Not an massive surprise Mo Farah and Andy Murray have Knighthoods.

Perhaps Sir Farah will get better treatment by customs officials now.

Re: New Years Honours List

I don't know why Andy Murray got a knighthood. This Honour stuff should be overhauld.

The honours should go to people, who have worked hard for charities - which get overlooked by this Government.

And yet a Tory, gets a Knighthood for pouring money into the Conservative Party.

Even more reason to get rid of this outdated, corrupt, cronyism system then if they're all at it.

Sorry den, but why should they get rewarded for being good or better than others in a hobby? It's high time sports stars stopped getting honours, especially Sir and Dame as it cheapens the title imo.

It is due an overhaul i agree .I also think that the idea of lumping lollypop ladies and carers in with bankers and politicians is very patronising .Are they there because the government really want to honour them for their services or as a sop to the public so they can continue to give their buddies honours

That's exactly what it is, a sop, an obe is practically worthless so it's okay to give it to a little old lady who has spent the last 30 years helping the disabled, she didn't expect it but is thrilled by the award but your senior civil servant who knows where the political bodies are buried does expect rewarding and with a knighthood he can get actual real money by selling his title to a multitude of dubious companies desperate to legitimise their activities with a knight on their letter heads. Same goes for political donations, they don't do it for their health so if they're not lobbying they will want something else for it, see how much they give if you try and fob one of them of with an mbe. The whole thing is rotten imo

So it can be used to disguise the honours real purposes to reward friends and cronies, the papers are full of film and sports stars instead of digging about who else got what and why

Re: New Years Honours List

There is so much wrong with this honor crap. There are people that stand on corners of High Street to collect money for charities, that go unnoticed .

We have major stars that give money to thousands of charities each year, and get nothing. The good thing is no Ken Dodd. Who has so much for charities and the entertainment business. And he has finally got one.

I think anyone who pumps millions into Political Party, should be barred from getting honours. What the Queen could do each year, donate money to say 100 charities, out of all that money she gets. And scrap the Honours stuff.

Its obvious that the PM recommends to the Queen, and she agrees

A 17-year-old who founded a campaign to end youth violence after a friend was murdered, is among the youngest people on the New Year Honours list.
Jeremiah Emmanuel, who is awarded the British Empire Medal, began volunteering aged just four.
At 13 he set up One Big Community to help young people find solutions to violence in their communities.

Re: New Years Honours List

If we must honour politicians and bankers then i would like to see the honours for civilians like the above mentioned on a separate list .Having someone on the list getting a knighthood for basically doing their job seems at odds with someone who spent 30 yrs raising money for local charities

Re: New Years Honours List

I don't have an issue with sportsmen getting gongs but it shouldn't be simply for being good at it. They are rewarded for that already - well at least in professional sport. The should get honoured if after they leave the lime light they contribute to the sport by volunteering to coach at grass root level or campaigning to improve the sport and access to it.

So Murray should get a knighthood when he gets to say 60 or so and has spent 30 odd years helping get tennis into urban areas, bringing up new players to top standards not (just as) a pro coach but helping push it at lower levels.
