Lightbulb Sony KD55XD8005 + Virgin V6 - how to setup up?

Hi guys,

Using the Sony 4K HDR with the Virgin V6 box, but unlike all the reviews I see online, the upscale quality of the HD channels is not "jaw dropping", by the contrary looks worse than on my 50" 1080p TV.

The HDMI cable is 2.0, connected to HDMI port 2 on the TV. Resolution is set to 2160p in Video Output on the V6 box...

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Re: Sony KD55XD8005 + Virgin V6 - how to setup up?

So at a guess I'd assume that when they're talking about up-scaling of the TV, then they're connecting an HD source to the TV e.g something like the current TiVo. As the TV is getting an HD input in, it then knows to upscale using it's own system.

However if the V6 is only set at 2160p, then it's outputting a 4K picture only, so the TV will just show that. It also means that it's the V6 doing the HD (and SD) upscale.

I think you may be able to get around this by also selecting the HD picture formats in the V6 Display settings.

This may make the V6 output HD channels in 1080, and then the TV will recognise it's not 4K and apply it's own upscale system.

Just a little disclaimer here - I have no idea what the quality of the HD upscale is like in the V6 in comparison to your TV. Nor have I seen HD on a 4K TV.

Ben is correct. Both Tv and box are upscaling and this can produce a not so great picture. I don't know why this happens as someone more technical may explain. I had a similar problem so I switched the box back to 1080p and the picture was great. Alternatively turn off the upscaling off on your TV and switch the box to 2160p. The problem with the latter is that some TV's haven't got the option to turn upscaling off.

Thanks for your replies.

When the V6 is set to allow all video outputs, 576p, 720p, 1080p, 2160p, the default when using a HD channel is 720p, not 1080p...

Shouldn't HD channels be on 1080i/p?

The quality is like watching a 576p or SD channel, far worse than the Sky HD box...

Try unticking all the outputs and just tick 1080p

Same rubbish low resolution... No change, either 720p, 1080p oe 2160p, quality is unchanged on HD channels, something is definitely wrong...

Have you tried disconnecting the HDMI or switching the TV off and then on. That should reset the HDMI connection.

Yes, both, ON/OFF TV, swap the HDMI to another port, same result. Watching from 1080p on Apple TV is night and day when compared to v6 HD channels...

Why can't they just fix this so that it works how it's supposed to i.e. how it says it does things when you press 'info'! I was hoping that it would be sorted in the V6.

Can't wait for the technician to be here on Saturday, although I'm pretty sure something is wrong with the software, not the box itself...

Anyone else with a v6 box, how is video output setup on yours, specially if you have a 4K TV?

You need to only tick 1080i and 1080p and 2160p pass-thru.

This is the best option.

What I can't really understand is why the default on HD channels is 720p rather than 1080i? I have to untick the 720p/i option for the channel to default on 1080i.
