Help for Laptop noob please

Hi all,

Equipment : Desktop PC with XP Pro+SP3
Virgin 20meg broadband
Netgear WGR614 (802.11g) 54mbps Router (supplied by Virgin).

I would like to purchase a Dell 1735 laptop which has Vista Home Premium 32bit installed, and comes with a 1510 Wireless-N WLAN MINICARD fitted.

I simply want to surf the net from the laptop.

My questions are: 1. Will my Netgear WGR614 be compatible with the Wireless-N WLAN MINICARD ?

2. Will there be any problems having XP Pro on the Desktop
and Vista on the Laptop ?

Being a total newcomer to Laptops, could somone please advise me how I setup the Laptop to receive signals from my router and allow me to surf without having the Desktop switched on?

Sorry for these noob questions and thanks to all who reply.

Take care

Re: Help for Laptop noob please

Hi and welcome to the site.

Wireless N also does Wireless B and G so will work fine with your existing router. I have the Virgin Media Netgear router and an Intel Wireless N card in my laptop and they work great.

You won't have any problems running both Vista and XP.

As you are using a router your main PC will not have to be on as the laptop will send and recieve its signal over the wireless and has no need for the PC to be involved.
