They aren't allowed to encrypt PSB channels.

Thanks.
The main SD regional version of ITV in each area is not encrypted, additional versions for adjacent regions and AD versions are encrypted. The last scan data showed that the SDT had additional data added for STV AD. The data indicated that STV AD will be encrypted but that the pack codes hadn't been added at that point. That is the state usually seen when tests start, actual encryption follows shortly afterwards. At the time of the scan, STV AD hadn't been added to the NIT of VM's Scottish regions.

NIT data indicated that there has been frequency changes to networks on the Derby and Portsmouth headends, following on from those in other regions mentioned previously.

Well, it's not about Amazon bidding for Premiership rights, so I would have thought it would have left you distraught...

Don’t get me wrong, jj, you come up with some interesting stuff. However, I always thought that NIT data related to Diane Abbott’s mathematical calculations.

Once again, NIT=Network Information Table and SDT=Service Description Table. I know that it's jargon but after it has already been repeated several times I would have thought that most of the followers of this thread would get the gist by now.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

I'm sure that the majority of people do.

Interesting that VM are sticking to the letter of the law and encrypting what ITV regions that they can get away with scrambling, even though they have little to no value and aren't ordinarily available by the average cable subscriber, particularly when they will probably have to pay Nagra for it.

Do viewers in Scotland currently have to make do with ITV London AD like the rest of us?

Yes, Scotland gets ITV London AD on 853.

Encryption of any additional regions / services is probably agreed with ITV. I would have thought that VM would just purchase a licence to use Nagra encryption rather than pay for each individual service encrypted.

At the moment, yes, but apparently not for much longer. I'm quite surprised that this situation has been allowed to continue for so long. Given the eagerness of both ITV and STV to geo-block their respective catchup services.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

And, as the only independent franchise left, it's more likely to have different programmes than the quasi national ITV that everyone else now has.

Presumably STV AD will appear on 853 in Scotland and ITV AD will become encrypted for them. In the unlikely event that ITV is pulled from VM, at least eight impaired people in Scotland won't now lose their audio description service.

Actually, thinking about it, they could simply put STV AD on 103 in Scotland and let people decide whether to switch it on or not.

Yes, they do.

There seems to be a humour deficiency on this thread...

STV is technically made up of STV Central and STV North (formerly Grampian) both of which have regional news opt-outs. STV has 4 different versions centred around Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. So not as simple as just putting a single feed on 103.

I'm told that last night's scan showed that STV AD has now replaced ITV AD in the NIT of VM's "Code Download Test (Portsmouth)" network. Indicating that the feed is now being tested centrally. The "hidden" flag in the EPG section of the SDT had been removed.

OB may prefer to interpret this as STV AD being tested by Dianne Abbott but... there you go.

STV are not that independent.

STV only broadcast up to 7 different programmes.

Weekdays:
STV News (Local news) in 4 areas (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee)
Scotland Tonight [STV's idea of Newsnight] with Local news in 4 areas (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee)
Aftermidnight (Best of STV2)*

Weekends:
STV News (Scottish news)*

*STV Wide (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.)

---------- Post added at 14:51 ---------- Previous post was at 14:50 ----------

STV +1 is STV Edinburgh.

We get it here at Media Boy HQ. (STV Glasgow area)

Oh right, I thought that they'd have other local programmes too like the old style ITV regions used to. I remember a lot of people complaining when they stopped airing national ITV programmes in favour of content that STV thought more relevant to the local area (though IIRC this was as much to do with ITV saying that STV owed them money for their programming).

If the one STV AD being created is to show much the same as everywhere else does across the UK (and the local news is split into more than one feed, but the new AD will only be able to carry one of them), it seems a little pointless.

Re: The +1's that some people think are no longer relevant. Sky is to move them away from where they are on their EPG (mainly next to the parent channel) to elsewhere.

Maybe VM will follow suit with this compromise?

Anyone with a Broadcast Now subscription may be able to tell us more:

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

More info about the above:

After a consultation with the broadcasters, the changes to the +1 channels will be put back from 1/3/18 to 1/5/18.

Also, instead of being shunted into a dedicated section from 700 onwards the +1 channels will now appear from 201 onwards. They will also mirror the line up between 101 and 200 so that ITV+1 will be at 203, C4+1 at 204, C5+1 at 205 etc

Ahead of the changes there will be a 17 week trading window during which broadcasters will be able to reallocate or sell their current +1 slot.

I know some on here think that the +1 channels are now a waste of time with the advent of the increase to 6 tuners and the VOD catch up service, but I still find them useful at times.

I think that this idea is a fair compromise as those who don't like them can miss all of them out in one go whilst channel surfing, whilst those who want them can easily find them.

What would others think if VM were to follow suit?
