Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Probably irrelevant to this thread but I'd rather post here first.

Time of occurrence: 23:47

There were 4 objects in very close proximity of each other at a very high altitude in Hartlepool. I am certain at least one was a plane and flew southbound towards Teesside.

It gets strange however, the other three start performing some pretty agile turns rapidly in formation similar to Orion's belt. They flew in this formation for around 4 seconds before splitting off and all heading at a decent distance apart towards the hartlepool coast.

TCX3314 / TCX45YB
Thomas Cook Airlines is showing up on Flight Radar and would be southbound flight I seen.

Do military aircraft show up?

There was aircraft noise as expected but it went with the Thomas Cook 757. The other three omitted nothing.

Not a UFO fanatic, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on what I just seen? Too high to hear and as simple as an escort of some kind?

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Military aircraft do not normally broadcast the protocol which identifies position, altitude and speed (ads-b). Actually neither do many private aircraft, executive jets and short-haul prop liners

There are ways of tracking such aircraft by other means but it's unlikely that you will see the military ones on FR24.

There's a NATO air exercise in Bulgaria next week so you might have seen F16s/F15s air-to-air refuelling en-route

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

That's pretty good. Makes complete sense too, I'd be inclined to be almost certain that's what I saw. They did nothing modern day tech isn't capable of and it explains perfectly why they'd break off just before the coast.

There are at least 4-5 black aircraft flying overhead daily in 3s or pairs that are never on Radar, kinda look like Lear jets.

High or low level? They might be Hawk T1/T2's out of Valley as the plan form may resemble a small biz jet at high altitude.

They are on secondary radar but unlike passenger aircraft their transponders are just not broadcasting their position (usually only height and callsign)

If you want to be able to track them then you need a system that either does MLAT or has MLAT sharing. This gives a positional fix by comparing timings from a number of ground stations to triangulate position. I use Plane Plotter for tracking the military stuff but I do have the ability of also recieving the reports directly so even though they are not broadcasting their position I know that anything low level with a HEX code starting 43C*** is UK military and close by.

FR24 also recently started doing mlats.

Providing the 24 bit address in the data payload hasn't been obfuscated

Plenty of that going on at the moment

Cool Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Fairly low, almost certain it's these

Colours black and gold. Mostly black.

Follow literally the same plan daily, business jets on the same route daily? Just found it weird to have them in formation.

The dual turbine engine at the back is the giveaway though.

That's a Lear 40

Yep there is specific equipment wich provides this capability and there is a provision for it's use in the FAA airworthiness approval advisory circular for ads-b. Specifically when a flight plan is not filed and no ATC services are requested (make of that what you will!).

FAA is nothing too do with RAF equipment. Cockpit crew can not change the code on an RAF aircraft.
As such all RAF transponders (although mode C) will start with 43C

Not the point really, it merely illustrates the technical feasability of the practice and nope not RAF per-se. Things that BAE systems are playing with up at Warton is a different matter as are certain flights going through the zone from across the pond that I'm sure London Mil are well aware of.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Not a good few days for small aircraft... Firstly the small biz jet at Blackebush Airport which crashed into BAC's carpark. Then a Gnat at Oulton park has crashed just over an hour ago and now rumours of a spitfire incident at Biggin hill though supposedly not a bad incident.

---------- Post added at 15:20 ---------- Previous post was at 15:01 ----------

Spitfire incident was a forced landing, pilot is OK

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Had my first flight experience today, a Christmas present courtesy of my wife. Amazing, 30 minutes on ground instruction followed by one hour in the air. I thought it would be 'OK we're up to altitude, take the stick for 15 minutes and fly straight and level'. Nothing like. Apart from take off, the first 5 minutes and landing the instructor's hands were never on the stick. I flew it all! Very demanding, but also exciting. Luckily she's less of a back seat driver in the air than on the ground...
