Virgin Media Begins Deployment of VoIP Phone Alongside Broadband

Quote:
Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve just begun a limited deployment of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to replace their old phone (line rental) service, but it’s currently only being sold in areas where the operator has deployed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

No big surprise here, we all knew it was coming

I wonder how much they charge for calls/packages? I currently use a voip provider and would be tempted if the price was right.

If you only had to pay for the call packages, I'd be in. If you have to pay line rental too, it wouldn't be worth it.

I have a voip service, delivered via broadband to the mobile - £2.46/month for the number. Outgoing calls made via my included unlimited minutes.

Way back in 1997 I worked for a subsiduary of Newbridge Networks (vienna systems) and we were among the pioneers of the technology.

Those were the days, fly out to customer site (customer=incumbent telco usually), install hardware & software. Find a bug, report back to base, they'd fix it, we'd d/l a patch and test again.

I imagine Virgin will happily milk the cash cow that is Line rental for quite some time, at least until Ofcom forces the other telcos to be competitive on it.

Even if they don't, I expect the best you can hope for is a reduced Line renal rate, maybe half price at best.
