anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

Hello

Since switching to virgin broadband I find that free anonymous proxies
no longer work in either int ex or firefox

I've checked the lan config in int ex and the settings in firefox to no avial any suggestions or are VM doing something to block them?

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

What proxy have you tried using, and what port do you need to specify?

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

Hi thanks for the welcome Toto

Lots of different proxies with many different port numbers
none of them work now.

I have my own list but for example none of the proxies on proxy4free.com which I've tried work whereas they do on a friends isp

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

Working fine here in warrington via a proxy from that site

You appear to be on a Virgin Media Connection
Your IP address is 81.102.**.***
Host cpc2-warr1-0-0-cust***.bagu.cable.ntl.com
Your Proxy IP address is 222.89.67.10
This is not a known Virgin Media Proxy Server

222.89.67.78:8080

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

Anon proxies will only work if they operate on ports other than port 80 (once installed a free coverdisc version of steganos internet anonym and it was useless since half the proxies it used were on port 80 and could not be filtered out of the list)
The error message you have given above suggests that the particular proxy you were trying to use was not allowing you access, or was not allowing access to the site you were trying to reach.

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

If you are exNTL then you should remove proxies and use Direct Internet Connection instead. Announcement was made a couple of days ago,

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

I've found a few that work but they are all terminally slow and thus unusable because of that.

I mainly use direct connection but I also use free anonymous proxies for rapidshare - or rather I was doing so happily until now

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

Still rubbish - tried dozens more with many different port numbers
on 2 different pc's and 0/S's, 3 browsing platforms and with/ without router, with/without firefall.

Very few proxies work for me and when they do they are dial up speeds

Gave hide IP platinum a try several times and whilst its logo spun as it accessed the net o'k and I could see it trying to get a proxy in my firewall network activity window, it didn't connect to a proxy either!

As its not a general problem for VM users I can't think what to try

Mick - could you post a link to the announcement please -I'd like to read precisely what VM have said regarding ex-NTL proxy servers. I'm in an ex-NTL area and until last Wenesday I had a rock solid 10Mb connection even at peak time in the evening, but since the removal of my proxy the service has been crap, running between 150kbps and 3500 kbps in the evening

Thanks

Rob

Pay the £4.85 it'd cost to get a months subscription then

And get all the well-hosted warez you like for it. lol. (Supposedly one of the biggest sites for warez uploads)

The removal of proxies will have nothing to do with your speed reduction, there must be some other fault.

This is the post in the VM Feedback forum by somebody called Alex Brown.

Quote:
Hi all,

I thought you might be interested to know that we are removing the
transparent web caches (or "proxies") that have been in place on our
network. This action is an element in our Internet unification
activities.

These have already been removed in all parts of the network other than
the Cardiff region - where we will be undertaking some upgrades
before we remove the transparent web caches. This should be happening
over coming weeks.

There is now no need to have any cache manually set in your browser -
and at some stage in the future we will physically turn them off.

So that this does not cause any potential loss of service (we're still
working on the switchoff plans), we request that you remove a cache if
you have it manually set in your browser.

How to check for and remove any manual settings:

INTERNET EXPLORER VERSION 7 USERS

From Internet Explorer's 'Tools' drop down, select 'Options', then the
'Connections' tab and the 'LAN settings' button at the bottom of this
screen. If any proxy server is set, you should remove the tick from
'Use a proxy server for your LAN'.

MOZILLA FIREFOX VERSION 2 USERS

From the 'Tools' menu option, select 'Options'. Along the top row,
click the 'Advanced' icon. Click on the 'Network' TAB. Click on the
button called 'Settings' and ensure that the 'Direct connection to the
Internet' option is selected.

Re: anon proxies not working on virgin broadband

There are mentions of it all around the web but i haven't seen any specifics.

I tried some of their proxies and they still work fine

So why don't non ntl/virgin proxies?
