Re: Should Virgin Media and Cable & Wireless Worldwide merge?
[QUOTE=Alan Fry;35375377]The BBC need both a licence fees and commercial services just to keep running!
If they had commercial advertisements on the main BBC channels, you wouldn't need to pay a licence fee, the BBC gets commercial funding from BBC World,BBC America and it also has commercial revenue coming from UKTV. BBC owns 50% of UKTV which owns the channels Watch,Dave,Gold,Alibi,Eden,Really,Blighty and Good Food.
The licence fee doesn't cover Channel 4, so why should it cover the BBC and if there is still not enough funding, maybe some paycuts to fat cat bosses. Also I strongly disagree with the idea of sharing the licence fee with ITV, if you can't run your business properly then tough! There are plenty of other TV channels which will pick up ITV's programming if it goes bust, it's all down to bad management, over paid bosses and overspending. Don't see why the government keeps wanting to bail out banks and private companies for there incompetence with there finances.

Where have I suggested giving money to ITV?
If they had commercial adverts, then it will go downhill to ITV/Sky's level, The BBC and Channel 4 are important institutions an this nation and need to be protected and well funded!

They were planning to share the licence fee with ITV as well.
The amount of money it costs to pay the company that collects the licence, deals with customer enquiries ect.... and the amount it costs to chase millions who don't pay is probably near enough of what they collect from the people who do pay.
Just like Council Tax, it is just another one of them stupid fees that cost the same amount of money it costs to run the collections department.
Not saying they should privatise the BBC, just saying it should be commercially run, that means advertisements in breaks,in on demand content and product placement.

A merger of Virgin Media and Cable & Wireless Worldwide would create a major rival to BT and boost the Virgin Media Business operations!

VM IS a major rival to BT already..
What they both are not is a major rival to Bskyb.

Virgin Media and BT have more broadband customers than Sky Broadband as well as Sky's easynet base.
Virgin Media has more Broadband customers than Sky
Virgin Media has more telephone customers than Sky
Sky has more TV customers than Virgin Media
BT has more telephone customers than Sky and Virgin Media
Virgin Mobile has more customers than BT Mobile
Sky has no mobile network
Sky TV is the only thing they are in front with.
Cable and Wireless Worldwide is a major rival to Easynet which is a national infrastructure owned by Sky and Sky uses this to deliver Sky Broadband.
Virgin Media acquiring Cable and Wireless Worldwide will make them stronger and will gain customers like Tesco,Ryanair and Aviva, as well as reaching more businesses.
What may not work is if Cable and Wireless acquired Virgin Media as they don't have the funds to do much with Virgin Media.

A commercially run BBC would end becoming as bad as ITV, The BBC should rise up beyond shows like the X-Factor, The Only Way is Essex, BGT and I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! etc
I am not not against advertising, but it need to be done right and in the right places!

I would prefer a merger between Virgin Media Incoporated (USA Based) and Cable and Wireless Worldwide plc (UK Based) with the merged company becoming Virgin Media plc (UK Based)!

I would prefer if your posts had at least a tangential relationship with reality.
We may be both waiting a long time......
