Talktalk blocking most of file hosting sites

I have some friends working in the middle of Manchester and they are connected with TalkTalk, after a recent upgrade, (now they can get 12 mb on a BT line!!) they found all the connections to file hosts such as Rapidshare, Hotfile have been blocked. Are there any Talktalk customers here experiencing the same? Can they do that?

Re: Talktalk blocking most of file hosting sites

It's happened to some Be / O2 customers also, probably a broken IWF filter, and yes they can do that if it's intentional.

Re: Talktalk blocking most of file hosting sites

It may well be a BT line but it will be ADSL2+ so running on TalkTalk equipment at the exchange... and yes Ignitionnet is correct, TalkTalk can shape their traffic its certainly in their T+C's (as with all ISP's).

Re: Talktalk blocking most of file hosting sites

It's not about shaping traffic, it's about blocking it. IWF and traffic shaping are different things.

Some ISPs voluntarily block websites with illegal content based on lists from the IWF:

Re: Talktalk blocking most of file hosting sites

If there is some IWF blocked content on a site at a particular IP address, then ALL traffic for that address gets passed through the filter proxy, and it usually just isn't up to the task of handling any high usage site (remember the Wikipedia debacle?).
