Re: Allotments
Well we've just confirmed which allotment is ours.. It's a good size one, was ploughed late last year so should be easy to clear but because we do have to clear it it means no rental charges this year (though it is only £16 per year)
Another good thing is that there's no silly restrictions like on some allotments which is really good.
ThanX again guys for your suggestions..

There's a plot holders guide up the top left which may be of some use?

Which is exactly the same PDF I posted a link to in post #8.

Re: Allotments
Something I found online is a great little fruit and veg planner for when to plant indoors/outdoors or harvest. Though someone else out there might find it handy.

Re: Allotments
Well things are going good..
Got it seperated up into 3 main large plots, 3 half plots and a long south facing vine plot.
On the vines gonna be grapes, Loganberry's and Kiwis. Got a couple of thornless blackberries which will grow over the low tool shed. on one of the half plots is now a load of strawberry runners (2 varieties), other half plot is Raspberries, redcurrants and black currants with space for some small ballerina fruit trees or more fruit on both. Remaining half plot will be herbs, salad, squash and maize.
On the 3 main plots 2 of them have just been seeded with a covering a celentien mustard to be chopped up come spring and dug in as a green manure. The remaining full plot has some winter veg on for now. Though in the end the three main plots will be rotated with potatoes, above ground and below ground veg.
Also found at the bottom was a couple of rhubarb, now transplanted at one end.
For an idea of the size each large plot is 10m x 4.5m and the smaller plots are half that size..

Re: Allotments
Actually my partners been doing most of the groundwork.. now they say that the planting is upto me and their mum
Next job for them though is to surround the plot with a small chicken wire fence as there are lots of bunnies about

Re: Allotments
My dad grows all sorts in our garden and it's not exactly a huge plot either
He grows tomatos in the greenhouse, beans, shallots, cabbage, lettuce and other stuff no doubt.
The shallots he uses to make pickled onions....a LOT of pickled onions I might add. heh

Re: Allotments
Sorry to bump an oldish topic but I got offered an allotment today (£35 a year) and I was wondering if anyone knew what I should start planting this time of year?
Thanks.

Re: Allotments
This time of the year you can plant some varieties of beans, onions, shallots, garlic though as the frosts are approaching you might find you;re too late for them even.
What state is the allotment in? if it's got weeds then you might be better chopping and covering in plastic until spring

Re: Allotments
It's in great condition as it was used by a family friend up until a day or so ago
So covering it in plastic is probably the best way to go since we have the frost now?
