Smile account advice

I'm leaving virgin mobile due to the lack of 4g, on my account I also have my wife, son and the in laws, if I transfer my number to a different network will I still have access and control of the account ie top up payg etc. I'm on a monthly SIM only deal so not tied to them on a lengthy contact, our will I have to drop to payg to keep access and get a new number, I've also got a virgin media if this makes any difference ??
