Whether they are not directly responsible for Presidential security, I suspect they do advise the Secret Service if they have good reason to believe there is a particular threat to the president, or his family.

Personally, I don't think that the JFK assassination will ever be entirely resolved. I believe that the US government will never release everything they have on the killer(s), and even if they did, there are people that I think will always think the government is hiding something.
