Re: What's happening in your High Street?
I live about 3 miles outside central Manchester and just over a mile from the massive Intu Trafford Centre. When the latter was given planning permission it was expected that my local town centre would just curl up and die. The planning process, one of the longest and most expensive in the history of the United Kingdom due to concerns surrounded the effect the shopping centre might have on retailers in the smaller towns and villages in the Greater Manchester conurbation and potential traffic problems caused by the its proximity to the M60 motorway. Eventually the House of Lords voted in favour of the development in 1996.
It opened in 1998 and although our town centre was initially effected it soon bounced back Nearly 20 years on we have very few empty shops and we even have have an additional pedestrian area with a Costa, Sainsurys, Aldi and my favourite Thorntons . Along the two main roads there is one betting shop, four banks, a few charity shops and lots of independent shops with loads of restaurants and bars - the area buzzes.
Contrarily to many, our council made a positive decision to provide lots of free parking and I think this is one of the main reasons our town centre still thrives.

Re: What's happening in your High Street?
There are some real idiots about. Today, as happens most Sundays, a good number of drivers decided to park where they shouldn't causing a big hold up in the narrow section of the High Street. In spite of the large controlled zone signs at all entry points (parking in designated bays only), there's always a few who'll either not be paying attention or be lazy/inconsiderate and park illegally. As soon as someone does, you can bet more will follow and today at least 6 vehicles were given tickets as we walked past. It's ironic but there's a free car park (Sundays only) just a couple of minutes of walk away. You'd think that word would get out but clearly not...

Turns out that our Subway is moving around the corner.Could be because the independent bakers next door pulled out all the stops not to lose trade and seems more popular.

I think Subways is franchised, we had 3 at one time, now down to one.

We lost our Subway a while back and I'm not bothered as I used to hate the smell emanating from that place. I used to wonder if it was some sort of 'fake' bread smell because I've never come across anything quite like it. It was almost overpowering at times.

Fish & Chips = 2
Italian/pizza/deli = 6
Cafes/coffee bars = 13

Gelato bars = 2
Modern/American diner = 3
Burgers/chicken = 4

Indeed and there must also be quite a few people who obviously don't want to put their aprons on in the kitchen either.

Re: What's happening in your High Street?
A couple more eateries have opened with another wine bar due soon. Lost a few shops in the precinct so I'm wondering if impending rate/rent rises are to blame. There's also been an outbreak of barbers for some reason...

Not to mention nail bars and pedicurists.

Well when money's really tight it's a good idea to eat out, drink out and be well groomed...
