I reckon the bed one is a manufacturers get out clause, that if you go back and say its broken, then they`ll say you`ve been using it too much

Yep, you're right
The term can be used for a table that's only sparingly used or as and when a (special?) occasion requires it's use BUT you make a very good point.
If it is only occasionally a table or a bed, then the question that must be asked as to what it is at all other times?
A basket of fruit? A Sony television? A ewe?
