Austria having re-run of presidential elections
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36681475
So basically in my household im screwed
No guarantees the my good lady will be allowed to stay here
(although my gut feeling is yes we will be fine but its not exactly the liberal tolerant country we all thought this place was)
And Austria starting to show signs of going towards nationalism so not exactly the best time to be a foreigner trying to emigrate there
(although peaking to people in the rural area British doesn't count , its about you know who)

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
Sorry but the UK is still a far more tolerant nation then most and the vast majority of it's population are still fair minded and welcoming and however the EU exit goes I don't believe we will be expelling EU citizens they were and will continue to be welcomed by this country. There is a tiny minority of ignorant knuckle draggers and just because they are causing more noise then normal does not increase their number or make them any more acceptable to the vast majority.

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
Yes when you compare what's been happening in various EU countries experiencing large migrant influxes, I think things here have been very quiet. Refusing to accept the concerns of the people is, however, a guaranteed means by which to stir up extremism but that's exactly what's been happening and look where we now are in 'welcoming' Austria. Will anyone in Eurolalaland learn however?...

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
I always thought that the Austrian vote result was iffy.

Yes it'll be interesting to see how it changes as a result of our referendum.

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
The good thing is that Austria doesn't have a history of far-right leaders so hopefully it will all be fine

At the risk of invoking Godwin's law, wasn't there that painter chappie a few years ago...

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
He wasn't the leader in Austria (until it was annexed).

So he was the leader? I'm just asking you to clarify?

Yes.
It was renamed Ostmark after the Anschluss, becoming a province of the Greater German Reich, then was renamed Donau-und Alpenreichs-Gaue in 1942.

Re: Austria having re-run of presidential elections
I thought he was a parking warden from Lewisham who had a son called Little.
Just goes to show the limits of a 'comprehensive' education...
