Remastering video material

I wonder if someone can answer a few simple questions.

1. Is it easy to remaster old video files?

2. If yes whats the best software to use?

define remaster, and also what format/medium the files are currently on.

They'll only be as good as the format they were originally recorded in. for example a VHS tape will never look like a DVD or Bluray.

Try to capture in a loss free format. Something like windows video plus wav audio in an AVI container. (Hauppage default?) This will result in a very large file. Then you can decide how much compression to apply as a post process.

If it's a VHS source remember that the video only has about 1/2 the resolution of a normal PAL* broadcast and somewhat less than an SD stream so can take a heavier compression.

*576i - Video (Y) 5.5MHz, Chroma 1MHz There are actually 625 lines but 50 odd carry no video.

Once the videos are in AVI format, freeware VirtualDub can do many things you may need.

AVI ReComp for Windows can do much that VirtualDub can do but without the rather steep learning curve.
