Rubbish download via BT

My sister has just moved to Cornwall from Yorkshire and now finds that her internet connection is rubbish! (@1Mb download on a good day)
Would a mobile dongle be any better?
Most likely on PAYG but who should she use as a provider?
Anyone had experience of using such a device and suggest who may be better than the rest.
Usage would be strictly e mails.

Depending on location, mobile dongles could well be better. But you'd need at least a postcode to get a better estimate. To be honest I'd imagine 1Mbps should be good enough for emails as it is, but assuming you mean light usage, whichever network has 4G in the area would be the first choice.

If she already has a mobile contract and suitable device, it may be cheaper just to get a bolt-on added to that, than getting a separate dongle/MiFi.

I use a PAYG dongle when I'm away in darkest Cornwall where you can only get a 2G connection. This is still adequate for e-mail and also light browsing (No videos) if you can be patient. Faster than dial-up but not much. No good for bank or other secure interraction as the sites generally timeout before the page transaction is complete.

A £5 data pack, 250Mbytes (Vodafone) is usually adequate for the 2-3 weeks I'm away.

If I can get a 3G connection then it's really quite usable, speed test shows around 3-4Mbs
