Schoolboy threatened with suspension after making £14k selling crisps
http://www.itv.com/news/granada/2014...elling-crisps/
Quote:
A 15 year old schoolboy has been threatened with suspension making £14,000 selling sweets to pals in the playground.
Budding businessman Tommie Rose, has made a fortune by selling chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks to pupils at Buile Hill High School, Salford. He buys them in bulk and sells them at competitive prices, even employing two mates to help run his business, paying them £5.50 a day. He says the money will go towards his University tuition fees.
|
Quote:
But now Tommie’s business empire is under threat because the school says it breaches their strict healthy-eating policy and he has been accused of running a ‘black market on sweet treats.
|
Black market? How do they work that one out?
I really despair of my profession at times.

Re: Schoolboy threatened with suspension after making £14k selling crisps
I did something similar at school and got into trouble over profiteering even though my prices were reasonable and cheaper than the school shop and tuck shop, talk about make the rules up as they go along, my charity endeavours were also frowned upon

One of my brothers was doing that sort of thing over 30 years ago. Good to see there are still some young entrepreneurs out there.

The school's headteacher, James Inman, however, told The Independent that Rose had been neglecting school for his burgeoning business, and that the school is concerned that he won't pass his GCSE's let alone go to a university like Oxford or Cambridge.

He started selling snacks three years ago, for which he was suspended at his previous school the Oasis Academy.

He racked up 10 days of suspension from his old school, the Oasis Academy in Salford, as punishment for his trade in September 2011.

Sounds like a model pupil....

Sounds like a perfect candidate for vocational training to me.Very short sighted school that is inclined to the academic route rather than actually teaching the individual.

Whose boundaries.? What rules? That only academia will get you life's rewards?Seems to me he has already learned that there is more than one way to get to your goal.Frankly any university seeing his ability to think outside the box may well jump at taking him on.Besides which he has time to catch up with GCSE's at college..

Re: Schoolboy threatened with suspension after making £14k selling crisps
I don't have any sympathy for him. If he's doing it on school premises trhen its upto the school to decide if they allow it. Its no different than if he went to Tescos and stated selling his wares there without permission.

As far as he is concerned that would be the schools boundaries ,if the school allow him to continue then what about all the other kids who want to do the same ,selling who knows what and neglecting their studies which the school are legally obliged to provide .
Is he paying any tax ,or registered as self employed ? if he's making that much then he would do well to learn the procedure or he will lose everything

And this is why we have no young entrepreneurs.Discourage rather than encourage unless of course it's science based technology.
With any luck once he's sorted out the legalities and survived college then he can get the deposit for his first home sorted rather than get the government to give him a roof over his head.
Of course if he had done what one young man I taught did then no one would turn a hair. Which was to get a scratch off lottery ticket at 16 and win £30,000.

With any luck he'll pursue his entrepreneurship outside of school hours and off the premises ,one thing puzzles me though ,if he's so good at buying and selling stuff why does he want to go to university so badly ,I rather think that is just an excuse to justify his flouting of school rules

Possibly because he's been sold the stupid idea that the academic route is the only one to take. However my sister-in-law went to LSE,gained a degree, started her own publishing company in London, made her millions, sold it and her £2 million Dulwich home, moved back to Wales and retired at 50 so he may just think it's the way to go.

Re: Schoolboy threatened with suspension after making £14k selling crisps
The brother of mine in question didn't trouble academia after age 16 but has too gone on to be a millionaire and paid a hell of a lot of tax in the process as well as routinely working 60 hour weeks. In spite of my advice to quit and retire, he's still at it...

Re: Schoolboy threatened with suspension after making £14k selling crisps
He was undercutting the school hitting their revenue pure and simple you only have to read some of the replies here to see why we have social problems. This kid saw a chance to create an opportunity and took it everyone was happy except the school but he now gets condemned for doing something and if he did nothing he'd be condemned. People only know the headline yet are judging him perhaps he is serious about university but doesn't want to end up tens of thousand in debt or is that now the way it has to be to please some people. This is nothing its always happened at school so why they are making a big thing out of this is beyond me.
