Now, Scottish devolution has been ongoing for decades, and London has been seen as being far too powerful for just as long. As far as I know, there has always been the appetite for more powers to the regions, so why the hell did the people reject it when given the chance?
Because their not stupid, they know that all that devolution in England will achieve is yet another tier of government on massive remuneration desperately trying to justify their existence

That's an argument for not building infrastructure anywhere. Infrastructure is intended to allow growth not prevent it.

Lack of investment in infrastructure can restrain growth. It can also lead to having to pay the Chinese and French governments over the odds charges per MW to build and run your power plants and in the interim running the risk of brownouts.

We're so awesome.

Nope. In the context of the discussion it's an argument for not continuously expanding the infrastructure in London. How about "allowing some growth" in other parts of the UK?

In which case they'll continue to grow like 'beasts' and suck up a 'disproportionate' amount of resources in their regions of the UK just as London has in England.

Extrapolation without foundation . I'd like to think that lessons will have been learned from London's "mistakes". But to keep making those same mistakes is imho short-sighted and insular.

We disagree and that's fine; in the wider context, I just think there'll be repercussions.

Of course there will be. Not the least for the people in and surrounding London who're being increasingly hemmed in or driven out.

At the opposite extreme, build it and they won't necessarily come - as deserted roads and regional airports in Spain will attest.

There is a massive opportunity here, if only there was someone with the vision to grasp it. The issue of devolution for England is now live and the opportunity is to implement it regionally, with the emphasis on economic development.

I reckon when it happens there'll be lots of 'God's own country' folk who'll object loud and clear to their peace and tranquillity being spoilt. It's already happening with HS2.

Always are. For the most part they need to be told to think about what was there before their houses and the infrastructure serving them was built, stop being so selfish and stop complaining about their ridiculously inflated house prices not rising at 10% per year.
