Maybe but personally i don't think so ( i am a member ) from the interview i saw of the hospitals chief of oncology they just think they are always in the right so it would have happen to which ever set of parents what ever their race or creed that didn't do as they were told.
in fact they likely thought twice as we have hospital liaison committees and a fairly good knowledge of medical procedure and law from various issues in the past

Re: Ashya King - found
Hospital's side of the story has come out now: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2...y-court-ruling
Essentially they don't think the treatment was workable because it's only good at targeting local tumours whereas in this case the surrounding issue would need to undergo radiotherapy anyway.
Quote:
Proton beam therapy is commonly thought to be a kinder type of radiotherapy because it does not affect so much healthy tissue. But with this particular cancer, cancerous cells may be anywhere in the brain or spine, so the advantage protons have in treating with highly localised tumours, for instance in eyes, is lost. Most of the brain will still have to be irradiated, the doctors said.
|
It would appear however that the parents request was referred/met anyway but turned down by the NHS panel that chooses whether to pay for patients to go abroad and receive such treatment because of the aforementioned issues.
Quote:
They also said that an application for NHS funding for proton beam therapy for Ashya was turned down. NHS funds children under certain circumstances to get proton beam therapy abroad, but an application for Ashya to have the treatment was rejected because it offers no benefit over conventional radiotherapy. The side effects will be the same.

Re: Ashya King - found
that article just goes to show my point that they ( the doctors ) decided they didn't want to do it and then didn't want the parents to make a decision that went against theirs even though them taking him for treatment wouldn't be detrimental at worst it will be the same as the therapy they wanted to give . they just dont want parents making their own minds up . and thats not a dig at all hospitals just this one

Re: Ashya King - found
Actually, as posted earlier, whilst the NHS wouldn't fund the treatment, the hospital were willing to refer the child to the Prague hospital.

So basically they didn't want the cost of it on the NHS and used the old chestnut of 'it probably wouldn't work anyway' to justify it. Yet other hospitals in europe have offered to do the same treatment as they think it may be useful.
So we still don't know why the hospital told the police that the kid was at risk, when they were aware the parents were looking to take him for treatment they wouldn't give him due to cost. I do wonder if the hospital are protecting a member of staff who went out of their way to cause problems for these parents. I doubt the police went and did all this off their own back although if they did, someone needs to admit their mistake and apologise.

If they were willing to refer them to the Prague hospital, why was the fuss kicked up when they went to europe to get the treatment for him? Something doesn't add up and not much points to it being the parents at fault.

No. Their story is that that it's not a localised cancer therefore the treatment isn't suited for this case as the surrounding tissue will still need radiotherapy.

Because the hospital alleges that they didn't know he was taken for that rather than probably referring and that he requires radiotherapy within a narrow timeframe which is now not happening.
