windows updates

I have windows 8.1 and last week had a message to tell me that I have a few updates to install. But when I try to install them my lap top just freezes . If I go on to control panel and get to windows update and click press to see if you have any updates again my lap top freezes . So unable to do any updates even though I know there are some to install.
This started last week up until then updates have been working fine. Any ideas how to fix this problem, Thanks

Re: windows updates

Does everything else that you do work normally? It would be useful to run some checks on the hardware. Just make sure what you run doesn't try overwriting anything. If you can backup any important files that you don't want to lose then you could try reinstalling windows. Just make sure any other programs you need you either have the discs or cab download them.

Re: windows updates

It may not be the same problem as u but i have a similar issue on Windows 7 Pro x64 when installing updates i think PC has frozen but it hasnt.

It will install updates and restart and upon the restart where it then prepares updates etc the system stops for 3-4 mins with no hard disk activity or anything and then suddenly it will kick in and say its finished and i can log into Windows.

im wondering if this has anything to do with a problem i have.

Since last round of updates i have had 2 blue screens and memory dumps but ONLY if im watching videos in Media Player and when i look at the dump record it says its to do with DX driver and ATI driver.

I have installed all latest video card drivers and codec packs and touch wood all is ok.

Re: windows updates

Fixed it, I was able to finally see what updates are installed and deleted the last one that was installed which was dated end of july. I have now managed to get the updates working again after doing this. I only hope it does not install its self again.
Thankyou every one that responded to my question
