On free Saturday, you were temporarily subscribed for 24 hours. At the end of the 24 hour period, you became unsubscribed.
You recorded during the period you were subscribed but tried to watch the recording during the period you were no longer subscribed.

So - consider this:
If I was "properly" subscribed having paid for the subscription, recorded something whilst subscribed but then tried to watch it having ended my subscription, would I then be able to watch the thing I had legitimately paid for or not?
Because if not, that is plain wrong.

Standard Sky terms & conditions, which VM have to comply with...

In your eyes, it's wrong and I respect that view but actually it's the way that I and others have described, whether you like it or not.

It was just a freebie, Meng. You'll know better next time.

Did you actually read my original post, or any of the rest of the thread???
Get over the fact that my Tivo thought it knew better than me by recording something I wouldn't be able to watch later? Is that what you're saying I should get over?

That's not really a nice thing to say. While I can see why VM have done this, and that they had no choice, it's not the customer's fault, and while it's not VM's fault they have to do this, I personally think that when they advertise days where you have access to premium channels, they should make it clear that you will be unable to watch any recordings of any programmes shown during the free day after that free day unless you subscribe to the channel.
So, VM are not at fault for doing it, but they are at fault for not being honest and open about the fact you will be unable to watch any recordings without being subscribed to the channel. They have never (in my experience) stated that you will be unable to watch these programmes after the free day. While I am no legal expert, I feel this *could* be considered false advertising.
Personally, I feel that Meng has every right to feel slightly angry at this, even though the channel was being given freely.

It's the first time that VM have done a Sky Sports freeview since the unsubscribed recording restriction was required by Sky as far as I know (and possibly ever), so I would expect that any issues identified will have been noted to avoid in the future.
However, as someone over on the Community Forum pointed out, this is in the T&Cs:
Quote:
You acknowledge that we are entitled to prevent the copying of any part of the television services and to delete from the equipment we have provided to you recordings which may have been made by you lawfully, but which are from channels you no longer subscribe to.

The fact that the advertised 24 hour 6am to 6am period was ended early, resulting in a boxing match etc being cut off is certainly a case for the Advertising Standards Authority.
It has been suggested over in the 'Coming Soon to Virgin Media' thread that the freeview was done manually (because of the infrequency of these freeview periods, it wouldn't be worth investing in automated equipment) and the person responsible wanted to go to bed

I don't think that the terms & conditions referred to are technically correct. AFAIK, the freeview recordings are not deleted afterwards, but are made inaccessible to you until you resubscribe.
Resubscribe could be another feeview period, so, if it's any good to you, you could watch your recording then (or, of course, if you ever paid to subscribe to the channels).

Re: Gee. Thanks a lot Virgin.
Why isn't it possible to have some kind of time-stamp on the recording, so that it can be available to view retrospectively?
Also, it would be handy to have some sort of 'don't record in HD' option available to prevent this sort of thing from happening - or an 'override in HD if available' yes/no option.

The T&Cs just say that VM have the right to delete the recordings. It doesn't say they necessarily will do so.
