With a ping of 8 to the speedtest server, your gaming should have been brilliant? Still a ton of jitter on the connection or something else?

Not really, pinging a regional speedtest server on Virginmedia's network from a Virginmedia connection does not represent anything at all. Least of all how good and stable the connection would be for gaming.

Obviously. But getting a decent ping to a speedtest server usually suggests that similar pings will be gotten on UK gaming servers who are often on the same peering links.
