What you could do to determine whether it's a problem the hardware or software, is to run a bootable copy of Linux from a CD or a USB pen. If the lines are still there then it's very likely that your video is indeed on it's way out.

Saying that, I think it's just an issue with the drivers your using. Do the lines only return after you've reinstalled the video drivers? Try updating them.
