Trouble is - you end up with a very long exposure (eg ~20 seconds).

What you really need to do is have the camera modified to take out the filter that normally sits in front of the sensor to block out all infra-red. Then to take normal photos you add an IR blocking filter to the front of the lens (eg B+W 486) or to take IR photos you add one to block out visible light (eg Hoya R72).

Many people will do the conversion for you, eg:
