These reports emanate from Gavin Patterson's statement that BT have a 'Plan B', but this might have been misinterpreted. BT have previously stated that winning the Premiership rights is not existential for them because they have rights to the Champions League and other sports which would allow them to continue to offer their own sport channels.

All of this does not necessarily mean that BT will not bid this time around. They may be merely facing the reality of having potentially to face more competition this time. With the number of viewers falling off and football now having to pay for itself on BT, they are not going to be paying silly money to retain these rights.
