Because Amazon would have all the matches it pays for. It could sell on selected matches to terrestrial or other broadcasters; provide snippets to YouTube and other platforms; set up Amazon pay channels on all pay tv platforms (not just Sky, Virgin and BT) including on Amazon Prime; employ techniques to enable discounts and promotions on these services by way of sales inducements; provide better access by way of pay per view events on all platforms; etc.
There are plenty of opportunities to make money out of having these sports rights in a way that Sky and BT do not and that is what would enable them to pay more for the rights while decreasing costs to the consumer.
