The Netflix originals in particular are setting a new quality standard. The Crown and House of Cards are just two examples of the standards that the BBC need to match or beat to justify their compulsory subscription fee.

No, that is not the case. BBC dramas are very popular in the UK and US. As are ITV dramas. That is why the BBC and ITV have setup up a joint streaming service in the US.
