That's the big problem with sealants. If the puncture is more than simply a nail in the centre of the tread they can't do much at all to help.
Case in point: While on holiday in Scotland I came across a couple of tourists who's suffered a puncture in a hired Focus after hitting a rock and damaging the wheel quite badly. Luckily the car had a spacesaver wheel supplied, but someone had made off with the wheelbrace, or the rental firm had removed it to force them to call if there was a puncture.
Of course, this wasn't much help when on a wet Scottish hillside with no mobile signal. Luckily my car's wheelbrace and jack fitted, and we got the wheel changed, but a can of foam would have been no use at all.
