quad helps alot if multi tasking, eg. 4 single core apps can get a full core each. Obviously also helps on multi threaded apps which are still not very common now days.

On my laptop a runaway process hogging cpu can cause it to almost stop responding as it only has 1 core, on this rig a quad core that wouldnt happen as I would still have 3 idle cores to keep the machine responsive. I often get firefox going crazy and hogging a core taking my cpu usage to 25%.

On the i5 and i7 cpus intel finally respected most apps still are not optimised for multi core so if someone runs an app that only uses one or even 2 cores then turbo mode will overclock the cpu to give extra power for 1/2 threaded apps. So the cpu is hybrid and can switch between optimised for one core of multi cores.
