When you consider it getting to the sudden death the advantage becomes clearer:
AB 1
BA 2
AB 3
BA 4
AB 5

SUDDEN DEATH
-----
Them A goes first, pressure on B.
Team B then goes again, pressure on A.
Then team A goes first, pressure on B. and so on....
Under the old system the person stepping up for team B (if team A had scored) would always know a miss would be instant defeat.
