Go for it, remove the bark as it makes a horrible taste IMHO. I use a Bilhook to cut chunks, then an old (electric) plane to make shavings and dust.
I made a few of this guy's smokers as cold/cool smoke is a better flavour for chillies (and cheese, garlic, onions, etc). The longer the pipe to the smoke box, the cooler the smoke.

Smoking on a BBQ is easy, but you need a lidded one. I smoke whole chickens and some hams.
