Re: Cheapest monthly VPN?
If you only want to keep your data secure at wifi hot spots and from ISP's bulk logging then a cheap vps is good enough. Just requires you to be able to follow instructions on how to install and set it up.
Never use a free VPN provider if you can help it. Normally their money is made from selling your browsing history from their logs. They also get compromised and the logs stolen a lot more than you think and its surprising how much useful data is there for hackers.
Paid vpn providers have the benefit of multiple IP addresses/locations and a simple to use interface. The decent ones also have different ways of encrypting your connection as well as methods that bypass firewalls when you are inside a network which might block vpn traffic. If you don't require any of those features, get the cheap vps.
As much as I hate to recommend them for privacy reasons (US based, National security letters/gag orders, no warrant canary, nagging feeling it's run by a government agency etc etc), if you only care about the basics of hiding your traffic then PIA/privateinternetaccess.com is probably the cheapest vpn provider for single months and easiest to use. For someone truly in to privacy I would recommend more costly alternatives though.
