OK so i did a bit messing about with a mates HDD dvd recorder. Looks like a clash with my Philips as his recorder didn't have the issue but mine did on his Tivo. So anyways i skipped to Argos and got myself a new LG HDD/DVD recorder and everything works fine..
It was time for an upgrade anyways... thanks for your help though guys
