repairing phone extension cable??

Hi all, I'm new here so sorry if this is in the wrong place!
I accidentally damaged part of a phone extension cable that links my main socket, downstairs, to a phone in my bedroom.
I've looked on the internet about how to deal with this and, following this, I bought a new piece of phone cable to 'bridge the gap' in the damaged cable. I've exposed the wires on the new piece that I've bought, as well as on the existing cable. My problem is that the existing cable has 7 wires (some in striped colours), but the new cable only has 4 wires. Help! What can I do now?
Any advice/help would be so much appreciated! Thanks. P.s. I was going to remove the damaged part and replace with the new, just twisting the wires to join, then tape up, rather than use a junction box.
