What's interesting is in the case of that second picture I linked to they have recently done a couple of digs on the duct and tarmaced it back over. So whether or not that particular cabinet does anything or ever did, the duct itself is certainly still in use.

Strange that the second map also shows a small part of Wirral called Hoylake is covered. The Virgin Media Business network map shows the same but that area has no service at all!
