The performances against poorer teams don't count for much. There are all sorts of factors which will give a false impression, for example a teams ability to hit teams with pace is affected by the pace of the other team, a pressing games against players who are poor at keeping the ball will give a false impression of the teams ability to use pressure.
England often appear good against lesser teams. They struggle against moderate teams and get roundly beaten by good teams.
It's only a few months after France walked all over England at Wembley. In that game England did what they did against Wales, tried to deny them space and time, it doesn't work against decent sides. France simply passed England to death taking advantage of the space conceded in the name of pressing.
