Men less likely to wear ties with a jacket

These past few years has seen the increasing trend of men not wearing a tie with a jacket, even in the most formal of settings, which until recently was extremely rare but is now commonplace. I'm curious to know people's thoughts on this.

I wear a tie only when I absolutely have to. Weddings, funerals, the odd other occasion.

Shirts have not required a tie at the neck for a century or more. As it is a decorative object, I choose whether I wish to decorate myself in that way or not. That’s it, really.

I started to ditch the tie about 5 years ago. It gets in the way and I think it looks nicer to just have a good quality shirt on.

I ditched ties, the bowler hat, the cape and plus fours many years ago. Far too anachronistic.

I havent ever liked Ties.............

The other day I saw a young chap with a tie on,I would say he is 5 or 6....... I dunno why they had a tie on him but it looked quite out of place! (I guess cause I dont like ties anyway)

No one likes or enjoys ties. You have to wear them under certain circumstances.

I don’t wear ties because the Iranians don’t.

I last wore a tie to get my current job - Jun 1999. I wore a cravat for my wedding and simply don't wear ties at all now. I don't think I have a shirt that I can do up the top button.

Ties are torture devices. I HATE ties. A more unnecessary piece of apparel there never was. On my last day at Deane Grammar I took every school tie I owned - and BURNED them, laughing like a maniac as I did, knowing it'd be years before I had to wear one again!

Last time I wore a tie (and a suit) was my mothers funeral over 7 years ago.

As I conduct weddings and funerals I wear ties slightly more often than that, however my experience conducting funerals is that these days fewer than half the men attending own a dark suit and a black tie. The younger they are, the less likely. The youngest men often will be in white shirt, black jeans and the darkest coat they could lay their hands on (often leather). They invariably look like they work as a waiter and have nipped out the back for a fag while it’s quiet.

I’m the last to complain as I wear a tie only when absolutely necessary, but even I acknowledge the rare, formal occasion when dignity requires a uniform response from those attending, and I know (from having lost my black tie more than once and having to buy another one at short notice) that it isn’t expensive to own one and keep it in the back of the wardrobe for when required.
