Extending wifi range

I am looking to extend the wifi range of super hub2.

For 'both' wireless band 2.4GHz & 5GHz.

Tried a 2.4GHz TP-Link N300 but it was a nightmare cutting off 5GHz signal.

Not sure what to get next?

Any tips appreciated

the Linksys RE6500 is all you need.... used one for years with the SuperHub and numerous other routers! :)

If you don't mind doing a little bit of cabling then switch the radio off and get yourself a couple of Unifi AP's

Unifi is great, but they're not suitable for non-techy users due to the way the Unifi controller works. I'd recommend them for anyone who's not afraid of some configuration and the odd bit of SSH, but for "regular" mortals I'd suggest something like the Asus line of routers.

The Unifis aren't rocket science to configure. You don't need to keep the controller (fancy name for a bit of web code with a httpd running behind it) running unless you need to manage them to change the radio channel, update the firmware etc. The hardest thing you'll have to do is do the donkey work to get them neatly installed.

ie. getting the twisted pair up every floor of a three storey Victorian town house or fighting through the crap up in my loft to get a drop cable to the other side of the house!

It's still not as trivial as you're making out and leaves the user with a less than ideal experience.

Disabling the radio on the hub means the hub is still acting as DHCP server and Firewall to the network - this is historically where most of the Hubs issues lie. Just plugging in a consumer router and switching the hub to modem mode is far, far better. You can't use modem mode with the Unifi AP's as they don't do DHCP, they're literally just AP's.

Assuming your consumer router is fit for purpose in the context of the building and the use case.

Yes of course the Unifi APs are just access points, there was never a suggestion otherwise. There will always be situations where a one-box solution isn't going to cut it in which case you would be far better investing in this proven solution (which honestly is *NOT* difficult configure or manage in any way) than gambling one of those off-the-shelf black box APs/Extenders which all too often end up just being a litany of woes.

Afterall it's up to the OP to make an informed decision based on any advice given and based on his/her particular environment and requirements.

I don't disagree that one single unit isn't going to be enough for everyone, I just disagree that putting Unifi AP's around the house is better than putting standalone AP's around the house. You're still going to need something to manage those AP's, so you may as well start off with a simple router upgrade and then see where your wireless issues lie.

If you can find a black box AP which actually works properly. Good luck with that

if a job's worth doing....
