How to measure a 4K TV screen size?

It could be time for a new TV soon and i will be going up from a 40in to a 49in screen, which poses my question on screen dimension.

Do we still measure the screen diagonally to get the Width of the screen size and would this measurement not include the bezel?

The one i am looking at has these dimensions H63.6 x W108.9 x D9.9cm so would the Width be measured diagonally?

Measure the screen diagonally

That is what i was hoping for as it means the Width will be slightly less than it is on my 40in at the moment.

Yes screen size is diagonal but the width is just the width, side to side.

It won't be, it will be bigger.

H63.6 - top to bottom

W108.9 - side to side

D9.9cm - front to back

Screen size isn't really relevant when you already have the dimension of the set in this case.

Some useful guidance here

Seems some (all?) HD4K are including the bezel and whilst this may not be significant on say the Sony Bravia as the bezel is very narrow some of the more economy models have quite chunky surrounds.

Take your tape measure and as always Caveat Emptor.

BTW I just measured our 1080P Sony and the 42" is the active screen excluding the bezel.

Now thinking a 49in is too big for my room, a shame really as the really good 4K TVs start in size at 49in.

My 50 inch philips has a tiny bezel which actually only makes it slightly larger than my old 44 inch toshiba which a bezel you could sit on. It does make a difference and means you can get a bigger TV than you'd think in the same space.

Yup.

I went up from a 40" to 48" TV in roughly the same space and my Dad went from a 32" to 40" which was actually a little bit smaller (he had a really old 32" LCD TV)

I decided on a 49KS9000 curved in the end and couldn't be more happy with its size and high end panel.
