£15 computer !!
David Braben is a very well-known game developer who runs the UK development studio Frontier Developments, but is just as well known for being the co-developer of Elite.
Over his career his studio has brought us the Rollercoaster Tycoon series, Thrillville, Lost Winds, and most recently Kinectimals. In the background, however, Braben has been trying to tackle another problem: getting programming and general learning of how computers work back into schools. http://www.geek.com/articles/games/g...or-25-2011055/ |
Re: £15 computer !!
That is impressive.
However my son learnt about PC components at school last year (year 5- 11yo)......are they not teaching this in other schools? |
Re: £15 computer !!
I think he is quite right. I've seen that in schools they teach many things such as creating a website, making an access database, using graphs in excel, etc but nothing such as basic programming.
I remember when I was at school we started with programming a turtle to draw patterns and looked at simple code building. This pocket sized PC is a great way of getting kids involved in how computers operate. |
Re: £15 computer !!
I wouldnt mind one of those myself. I could think of loads of uses for them.

Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
The teaching of IT in our schools has recently been heavily criticised:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-16157519 Will this make a difference, both inside and outside of the education sector? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16316439 Quote:
The start of a revolution even? |
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
I was looking at it this morning.. Put one on a USB caddy and you have an ultra cheap NAS or with Servio running a cheap DLNA server.
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
Brilliant idea. The possibilities are endless.
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
Yes, and it's nice that a UK based organisation is behind this. Wouldn't it be great if this is the start of something huge!
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
It looks quite impressive, and as Osem says it's great to see a UK firm behind it. Will keep an eye on it thanks for the heads up :)
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
Good for another UK firm too it seems as ARM makes the chips.
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
It would be excellent if it had 2 ethernet ports, Think of the linux based router you could build with that :)
|
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
It's got a USB 2 port so easy enough to add another NIC/WNIC for router usage

Haven't we discused this device in another thread? I recall a discussion about it a few weeks back...

I think it'd be really great if those of you out there who appreciate the potential uses of this device share your various projects with the rest of us so we can see some actual applications of this technology. Who knows, we may be inspired and try some of our own... ;)

The dealers will get it then put there mark up on it and we will see something more in the region of $55/$75 mark my words. I have been waiting to get one of these but they can stick it up there  if they do this. |

I am not a very practical person :( - I can see me making one out of lego and just using some glue to hold it all together :)
I aim to make a very portable accessible pc to take about with me so any prospective employer can't bitch about how much hardware will cost for me to be able to to any IT work ;) Well - this is the case sorted ;) |

Well, I was going to buy a new NAS as the one I have doesn't have enough space.. I am now thinking I might actually buy one of these and build my own nas. Plug in a USB drive. Could be a lot more interesting than buying a NAS.

apparently that RS page was the wrong one, I never found a right one :( farnell pre-orders only, I guess some lucky ppl got through and ordered up the initial allocations at both shops :( Oh well, just have to wait and get one with a case etc. Fingers crossed those that got them put them to good use, and they're not just used to run xbmc. |

edit tried again, can pre-order at farnel, also coming soon, 2 bundles, one with sd card, another with sdcard and wireless mouse, no price though on those |
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
Well that was a balls up. Don't know anybody who managed to get one from RS...Farnell's website was on it's knees by 06:01 so I don't know how people can say they managed to order one from them.

Well now I have registered an interest at both places selling it - and a delivery date (23rd March) from farnell.
I've got my 8gb sd card ready now and a blackberry charger for power :) Just need to learn a little patience :) When I DO get both I am going to give Peter one as he's always on about learning to program. Nice |

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
I think the idea is that it's not an allsinging and all dancing game bit of equipment and the scratch programming tool is designed to help children learn programming..
I worry though that most kids will throw it in the back of a drawer purely because of it's limitations and will stick with their ps3's, iphones..etc.. |
Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?
Hopefully the foundation will produce the material to use with the devices and the suppliers will get the nice clear cases around them.
Then schools can have computers that can be used for coding without needing expensive software. With the interfaces they can get projects where the computer can "talk" to things and be "talked" to. They can eventually programme the pi and then have it work with the other things without being connected to keyboards, monitors and the like. Mix coding with some engineering and build something "practical". |
