£15 computer !!

David Braben is a very well-known game developer who runs the UK development studio Frontier Developments, but is just as well known for being the co-developer of Elite.

Over his career his studio has brought us the Rollercoaster Tycoon series, Thrillville, Lost Winds, and most recently Kinectimals. In the background, however, Braben has been trying to tackle another problem: getting programming and general learning of how computers work back into schools.

Re: £15 computer !!

That is impressive.
However my son learnt about PC components at school last year (year 5- 11yo)......are they not teaching this in other schools?

Halcyon 06-05-2011 20:04

Re: £15 computer !!

I think he is quite right. I've seen that in schools they teach many things such as creating a website, making an access database, using graphs in excel, etc but nothing such as basic programming.

I remember when I was at school we started with programming a turtle to draw patterns and looked at simple code building.

This pocket sized PC is a great way of getting kids involved in how computers operate.

I wouldnt mind one of those myself. I could think of loads of uses for them.

Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

The teaching of IT in our schools has recently been heavily criticised:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-16157519

Will this make a difference, both inside and outside of the education sector?

The $25 (£16) machine is being created in the hope that it will inspire a new generation of technology whizz kids.

The start of a revolution even?

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

I was looking at it this morning.. Put one on a USB caddy and you have an ultra cheap NAS or with Servio running a cheap DLNA server.

Osem 23-12-2011 17:35

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

Yes, and it's nice that a UK based organisation is behind this. Wouldn't it be great if this is the start of something huge!

Ravenheart 23-12-2011 17:42

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

It looks quite impressive, and as Osem says it's great to see a UK firm behind it. Will keep an eye on it thanks for the heads up :)

Osem 23-12-2011 18:33

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

Good for another UK firm too it seems as ARM makes the chips.

It would be excellent if it had 2 ethernet ports, Think of the linux based router you could build with that :)

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

It's got a USB 2 port so easy enough to add another NIC/WNIC for router usage

+1 on that. Mind you when they go on sale they are gonna be like rocking horse do do!

For the cost (when I get my mitts on one) I'm gonna be making a little media\t'interweb machine for the bedroom. Well that's what I'm hoping to do.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/Raspbe...ews-37722.html

Typical sell out if you ask me. This so called $25/$35 computer will be nothing of the sort. The dealers will get it then put there mark up on it and we will see something more in the region of $55/$75 mark my words. I have been waiting to get one of these but they can stick it up there  if they do this.

I just got a noontec N5 which does a simplified DLNA/Samba/WebDav/BT Nas last month so a bit late for me to do that with it (was only £40 with no drive).. I'm looking at doing Dual HD webcam recorder for mobile applications on a race vehicle so a raspberry Pi B board is ideal

It would.. Large enough SD card should give decent recording length as well.

Dear Customer

Thank you for joining the Raspberry Pi revolution and registering your interest in Raspberry Pi’s Model B board from RS Components.

We have received extraordinary levels of demand for this product. To help ensure as many people as possible can experience the Raspberry Pi concept, we are limiting boards to one per customer, and we will send you further information on your request in the next seven days. Once we receive the boards into stock, they will be allocated on a first-come first-serve basis, in order of when requests were received.

Thank you for your patience; we will be in touch as soon as possible with more details.

23:29 on my email as well. Personally, I'd love a custom case that looks like the old BBC Model B. :)

23:30 on mine, looking forward to this. No idea what I'm going to do with it yet but starting to look into some projects.

Trouble is I'm about a practical as a whelk that's been dead for six months so the chance of me managing anything more than a lego case is not likely

The Raspberry Pi can help schools get with the program

I think the idea is that it's not an allsinging and all dancing game bit of equipment and the scratch programming tool is designed to help children learn programming..

I worry though that most kids will throw it in the back of a drawer purely because of it's limitations and will stick with their ps3's, iphones..etc..

Re: Raspberry Pi - a revolution?

Hopefully the foundation will produce the material to use with the devices and the suppliers will get the nice clear cases around them.

Then schools can have computers that can be used for coding without needing expensive software. With the interfaces they can get projects where the computer can "talk" to things and be "talked" to. They can eventually programme the pi and then have it work with the other things without being connected to keyboards, monitors and the like. Mix coding with some engineering and build something "practical".
