Hezbollah 'mentor' Fadlallah dies in Lebanon

Lebanon's top Shia Muslim cleric, seen as a key figure in the founding of militant group Hezbollah, has died at the age of 74.
Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah was regarded as Hezbollah's spiritual guide after the group was founded in 1982, a charge both denied.
An implacable critic of the US, he had a wide following among Shias and backed the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.
But he was known among Shias for his moderate social views.
He held particularly progressive views on the role of women in Islamic society.
So he was implacable against the US and yet he had rather more moderate views about the position and role of women in Islam.

on the one hand it would seem he was modern and progressive and on the other a throwback.

The main point is what will this mean for Hezbollah?

Very nice for him that he managed to live to the age of 74, as opposed to the many young suicide bombers he's cult sent out to murder.
Like a lot of these leaders, there are not that many that seem to want to join the rush to paradise, even though they extol its many virtues to the young and ignorant.

So what do you think it will mean for Hezbollah?

I don't think anything will change at all I'm afraid, look at what happened in Gaza during the last interfada, Israel had a policy of decapitating Hamas leaders using drone attacks and each new leader was as extreme and as dedicated to the cause as he's previous number.
Both Hamas and Hezbollah have charters of intent so anybody wanting to climb the ranks of either of these organizations is not going to progress far by trying to tone down the rhetoric.
When you have organizations that believe they have a divine right to do what they are doing, and honestly believe "god" is with them and that he approves of their methods to achieve their goals, in my honest opinion your on a hiding to nothing. The only thing driving these people is fundamentalist religious dogma.
