Virgin Media Trials FREE 166Mbps WiFi Under Pavements in Chesham

Ordinarily most operators prefer to install WiFi access points above ground, not least because it helps the 2.4GHz signal to propagate, but telecoms infrastructure owners like Virgin Media have a lot of manholes around the place that can also be used (makes it easier to tap directly into their core capacity links) and apparently this approach can still cover an area of up to 80 metres.

WTF? Placing WiFi underground and expecting to cover 80m? Yeah, sure, along 80m of ducting perhaps.

What a stupid idea.

Actually leaky feeders along existing ducting, OR injecting the signal into the existing coax cabling, that would be hilarious.

"I'm getting WiFi even though my Superhub isn't plugged in!"

[Edit]

Oh wait, they're just gluing APs to the bottom of manhole covers. Not quite as dumb then. Though ultimately about as ineffective as the WiFi installed in street benches by Edinburgh council.

Hope they do it around here. Then I might get better then the 8Mb I get in the evenings with my 152Mb PAID FOR wired connection.

29Mbps upload? And this is running over their HFC? Lol.

While everyone's moaning about crappy upload speeds on VM they're giving five times their average upload away for free to non-VM customers?

How long before the first manhole cover gets nicked, free WIFI router thrown in.

Gonna look a bit suspicious, methinks, carrying that thing down the street.

These manhole covers are not made of metal :) .... they are made of plastic so worth nothing at the scrapies plus the AP point bolted to the underside of it is not much use to the every day thief either ..:)

Chesham high street is pedestrianised. Even when cable builds were going in years ago, fibreglass inspection covers were being used in areas with little or no vehicle access. Nowadays they can be installed even where there is traffic. Also mixing WiFi & metal covers doesnt seem to be a good idea anyway.

Actually I already have several.

What I don't have is a direct fibre or coax fed AP, though quite why I'd need one I'm not sure. I've not got any >100m outdoor coverage projects going right now.
