Microsoft to end support for Windows Phone

Anyone who owns a Windows 10 Mobile phone needn't worry. OK, there are probably only a few..

Microsoft is to end support for Windows Phone.

It's a shame. Had Microsoft actually marketed Windows Mobile/Phone well, it could have been a serious competitor to Android and/or iOS. It was a fairly serious competitor to Symbian, and the various proprietary OSs on Mobiles previously, and with the redesign that came with the name change to Windows Phone could have carried on.

I had an HTC Tytn II (still got it somewhere). While Windows Mobile was a clunky attempt to force a Windows desktop like experience on a mobile, Windows Phone 7 and 8 were (IMO) excellent mobile OSes. Ironically, Microsoft decided to capitalise on the start screen introduced in Windows Phone, in Windows 8. Thus attempting (in a clunky way) to force a mobile phone like experience on to Windows Desktop.

Sadly, Microsoft don't seem to understand the Mobile device market. Yes, they have the surface, which is a good tablet, but their strategy for marketing it seems like a muddled attempt to sell both more windows desktops and their cloud services rather than a serious attempt to establish a competitor to Google or Apple.

They seem to view tablets and mobiles as extensions to PCs. This is a good view, to an extent. The problem is they see the mobile phone or tablet as the same device as a PC. To a large extent ,they are. The way we use them though dictates that they have different user interfaces. Microsoft don't seem to understand this.

You've just explained why the Windows phone died a death. I don't think anyone will miss it.

I have one and it is very chunky, poor camera compared to for example a Samsung.

Re: Microsoft to end support for Windows Phone

I have two phones. A Lumia bearing the Microsoft name running on Windows (10) and a Samsung running on Android. Both work OK as phones, cameras and all the required functions.

The only criticism of the Windows phone is that, while I'm out and about, it doesn't pick up on the Internet as well as the Android phone does. Maybe this is because it was the most inexpensive Windows phone I could find. For whatever reason, the Samsung is better at that.

As regards the interface though, I much prefer the Windows phone. Had it not been for the fact that Microsoft are not going to keep up support or updates, my next phone might well have been a later model Windows phone.
