Bad news for Apple iPhone 5, 5C & iPad 4 users

Apple's iOS 11 mobile operating system will not be available for the iPhone 5 and 5C or the iPad 4 when it is released in the autumn.

It means those with the older devices will no longer receive software or security updates.

The iPhone 5S and newer devices will receive the upgrade but some older apps will no longer work afterwards.

The news is the result of Apple's decision to end support for devices and apps using 32-bit processors.

Another reason I'm glad I'm anti-apple.

The iPhone 5 came out in 2012. How many Android phones have software updates 4-5 years on?

The iPhone has a longer support window than almost every Android phone. Samsung users get one major OS update for the lifetime of their device. iPhone 5 had four OS updates.

Anyway this is pretty good for iOS 11 and the next iPhone which will now be able to free up space on the A11 processor since it doesn't have to support 32 bit apps anymore. It helps Apple move forward with what their phones and tablets can do. Look at how powerful the iPhone 7 is over anything else on the market or the iPad Pro.

Me too. A very hefty premium not worth paying for me.

I'm not sure I see the problem here, this sort of thing has been going on for years albeit a bit more regularly nowadays with phone tech becoming more sophisticated. Nokia used to do it back in the day, Microsoft dropped support for XP and Vista etc etc.

Granted Apple tech is usually more expensive (which is a different subject) but if you bought an iPhone 5 at full price when new and are still using it today 4 years on then that's pretty much money well spent surely.

It is. I think you actually get what you pay for. With Apple, you do pay a lot, but you get updates for years. With the higher priced Android phones (such as Samsung), you don't pay as much as Apple, but you still pay a lot, and get updates for years. With the lower priced Android phones, you pay very little and might, if you are lucky, get one update. With Android, you've also got the problem that although Samsung, Hwaiwei, LG or whoever may still be providing updates, your phone network may stop providing them to you. With Apple, you do not have this problem.

What gets me is that when Android providers stop updating a device, no one seems to mention it (even the high priced ones), but when Apple stopes updating a device, people start saying it's a reason not to buy any Apple devices.
