Community Channel asking for funds to prevent imminent closure.

Just seen an announcement on the Community Channel requesting funds or they will close on 30 June 2016.

I always thought that this channel ran on the goodwill of the broadcasting industry ie by being gifted capacity from Virgin Media etc??

If you wish to contribute, they have a Crowdfunder page:

They've got a brass neck, don't they think people pay enough! let it close I say.

I'd be sad to see it close as it's a not for profit altruistic venture that gives various groups and causes airtime that they would otherwise not have.

I'm going to seriously consider taking a stake in the channel to help it survive.

I never watch it. Judging by the precarious state of their finances and the disastrously unsuccessful attempt to raise additional resources, I guess I am far from alone!

Let's just do the kindest thing and let it die.

Goodwill only extends so far.. They still need to pay staff, electricity bills, equipment hire or purchase etc. Even if the suppliers are willing to reduce their rates, they still need to be paid.

You'd be throwing your money down the drain. I mean, who watches it? And if it's you, do you know a friend outside your household who watches it as well?

There simply is not a sufficient audience to make it pay through advertising.

I think it should go into XL with £2 added onto the bill each month(!)

So what does the community channel actually provide? What does it do that say the local news doesn't?

It's an outlet for community groups, charities etc to showcase what they do, encourage participation etc.

Since we dont watch bt sports and charge £3 regardless let vm take that £3 for that as not paying any more out.

Well a lot of people are turning to social media and crowdfunding these days to get money for charitable issues.I suspect that is where viewers are going..

So let them pay for it, then.

I'm sorry - people give to these charities but only a very small proportion goes to the good causes they are supposed to represent.

The activities of the 'chuggers' and the attitude of the cold callers and the mailers in which they share with other charities the contact details of the gullible says it all.

If viewers don't want to watch the channel, who in their right mind would want to part with their money to keep an unwanted service going? What is the point?

Rant over.
